What will become of glass in a billion years? Scientists found out by finding glass in samples from the Moon

Meteoroids continuously bombard the lunar surface, turning regolith into molten puddles. And when these molten particles cool, they solidify and turn into glass.

Although the Moon has no atmosphere or flowing water to weather materials, the surface of the satellite is exposed to radiation. Over billions of years, these radiation effects accumulate.

Geologists have long been interested in the effects of radiation on lunar soil. Recently, scientists were lucky enough to receive real lunar glass samples, particularly those delivered by China’s Chang’e-5 module.
