What is important – the participants did not have to strain too much, concentrate their attention, they could, for example, control the third hand and talk at the same time. At the second stage, the virtual instrument was replaced by a physical one, in the form of a plastic stick on a belt with sensors. Users were able to move it without tilting the body with quite a lot of accuracy.
This project is not intended to create a full-fledged third robotic arm. There is no need for it, but there is an urgent need to understand how the human brain works with non-standard tools, how it learns. Scientists want to know if humans can be taught to live in a body other than the one given to them by nature to adapt to different situations. Again, this research will support the creation of exoskeletons and specialised devices for the disabled.
