Sugarcrete weighs five times less than conventional concrete and sets five times faster. It produces a carbon footprint of only 20 per cent of the emissions from concrete production. Large structures require steel reinforcement, but this is 90 per cent less than conventional reinforced concrete.
This material is not very convenient for capital multi-storey construction, but for the construction of barns, outbuildings, sheds and other lightweight structures it is very suitable. At least because it is the result of recycling rubbish, and therefore it is practically free of charge. In countries where sugar cane is produced, building regulations are much lower and the need for housing is no less high than in others. This technology can easily solve the housing problem for the poor.
