“Perseverance” found sandstone and mudstone indicating the existence of flowing water and rocks in ancient times. The lake was about 35 kilometres in diameter and up to 30 metres deep. It subsequently disappeared, leaving salt deposits.
The study also proved the existence of a once-fast river that spread and scattered boulders around.
