About 50% of Scandinavians living in the Middle Ages suffered from tooth decay

Thus, the researchers found that almost every second of the ancient Scandinavians they studied, or 83 out of 171 individuals (49%), had at least one carious lesion, which was characteristic only of adults. The scientists admit that in reality the situation could have been even worse because some of the people studied may have lost their teeth during their lifetime.
